Reporting to the Brand K Partners Chief Executive Officer, the Fractional Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is a senior-level executive who is responsible for overseeing the financial health, sustainability, and compliance for our Brand K clients. The role is ideal for a small nonprofit that needs executive-level financial stewardship without a full-time CFO. The Fractional CFO will provide strategic decision-making and transparent communication with key stakeholders using financial planning, budgeting, accounting, risk management, and reporting. The Fractional CFO will also work closely with the Brand K accounting teams to deliver accurate reporting and help drive Brand K revenue growth. This job is a part-time hourly position based predominantly in our North Haledon, NJ Office with some travel within the New York/New Jersey region.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

CLIENT ADVISORY

  • Financial Strategy & Leadership: Develop and execute financial strategies to support long-term organizational sustainability.
  • Serve as a strategic advisor to the Executive Director and Board on financial planning, forecasting, and risk.
  • Collaborate with the client’s and or Brand K Finance and Accounting Team, fostering a culture of accountability, accuracy, and collaboration.
  • Participate in organization-wide strategic planning initiatives.
  • Budgeting & Forecasting: Provide input to client’s long-range planning committees to establish and execute long-term organizational goals.
  • Collaborate with senior client leadership to prepare and set compensation levels, capital budgets, and establish other financial priorities.
  • Develop multi-year financial projections to support organizational growth and strategic goals.
  • Collaborate with the client’s and or Brand K Finance and Accounting Team in the annual budgeting process and provide ongoing analysis of budget-to-actual performance.
  • Monitor budget vs actuals and make strategic suggestions to address large variances.
  • Accounting & Financial Operations: Oversee day-to-day accounting functions, including accounts payable/receivable, payroll, and general ledger management.
  • Ensure timely month-end and year-end close processes.
  • Establish and maintain strong internal controls, financial policies, and operational procedures.
  • Assist client leadership with risk management and proper insurance coverage on all assets and operations.
  • Oversee key vendor relationships including accounting, payroll providers, employee benefits, etc.
  • Financial Reporting: Prepare and present accurate, timely financial reports for the CEO, Board of Directors, and funders.
  • Provide clear interpretation of financial results and trends to support informed decision-making.
  • Coordinate grant and contract financial reporting, ensuring compliance with funder requirements.
  • Compliance, Audit, & Risk Management: Ensure compliance with GAAP, IRS regulations (e.g., Form 990), and non-profit accounting standards.
  • Manage the annual audit process, liaising with external auditors, audit committees, client finance staff, and the Brand K team.
  • Maintain organizational insurance policies and oversee risk management strategies.
  • Monitor federal, state, and local regulations that impact the organization.
  • Grants & Fund Development Support: Partner with development staff to create budgets for grant proposals and provide financial documentation to funders.
  • In collaboration with the Brand K Partners team, oversee the tracking of restricted vs. unrestricted funding and ensure proper revenue allocation.
  • Ensure compliance with grant requirements and stewardship of donor funds.
  • Work with Development, client Leadership and Auditors to quantify impact of campaigns and donations on Public Support test.
  • Evaluate CRM and Accounting systems for sufficient information for future planning and forecasting.
  • Cash Flow & Investment Management: Monitor cash flow and develop strategies to ensure financial stability.
  • Assist client leadership in establishing appropriate reserve rates, investment guidelines, endowments, board designated reserves, etc. to achieve strategic, long-term initiatives.
  • Oversee banking relationships, reserve funds, lines of credit, and investment activities as appropriate.

CLIENT / SYSTEM IMPLEMENTATIONS:

  • Work with Brand K team in client implementations, system, and data setups, where needed to support advisory services.
  • Take the lead in streamlining processes where appropriate to deliver agreed-upon advisory services.
  • Keep abreast of system enhancements and upgrades that can create efficiencies for Brand K Team and Brand K clients.
  • Suggest and oversee system upgrades or conversions to meet client future needs.

REVENUE GROWTH:

  • Actively monitor opportunities for client upsell to meet future client needs.
  • Attend prospective client sales meetings to review client reporting and systems.
  • Assist in defining client proposal/contract scope and pricing.
  • Attend industry networking conferences and meetings to strengthen client/vendor/competitor relationships.
  • Maintain relationships with key providers/competitors to understand Brand K positioning in the marketplace.

EDUCATION | SKILL REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance; CPA and/or Master’s Degree in Business Administration or related area required.
  • Minimum of 8+ years of CFO level management experience within an Accounting or Finance department, preferably in the non-profit sector.
  • Knowledge of nonprofit accounting required.
  • Strong financial analysis, forecasting, and budgeting skills.
  • Experience overseeing audits, managing federal and state grants, managing compliance activities.
  • Strong understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Computer literacy in Microsoft Excel, QuickBooks, Sage Intacct, Blackbaud Financial Edge, and/or Fund-EZ.
